New song: denpa denpa denpa denpa January 10, 2009 at 8:28 pm
Sorry for the (brief) downtime today–I got tired of Wordpress complaining that I didn’t have the latest version of WP installed, so I had to upgrade. It seems to have gone without a hitch, which is a relief! (And apparently they’re already talking about 2.8! Geez you guys…)
Anyway, I did a couple new songs in one hour compos, and one of them was really a lot of fun to try to do–I wanted to do something in the style of MOSAIC.WAV and IOSYS and all those crazy Japanese hyperactive acts. The genre is referred to as “denpa”, which I believe means something like “electrified”. I’ve linked some denpa stuff before on the blog but just to refresh your memory, here’s some videos:

Anyway… here’s my attempt at the genre–although since it was a one-hour compo, I only had one hour and predefined samples to make it… Which made it slightly challenging to cram so much stuff into the song! That’s probably why it turned out short. Anyway, hope you can enjoy it despite that.
I enjoyed it and I hope you keep at it. God knows I’d like to know my way better around music software (I only played guitar for 15 years…) If you could make the percussion more aggressive next time, you’d definitely be onto something.

Unfortunately the samples were rather lacking for drums (no crash cymbal at all, had to improvise one out of the open hihat), so that’s why the drums are a bit punch-less. I’m thinking about trying to really make a denpa track, y’know, with full production and everything… Would be a hard project though!
